Keep the Bells Ringing in Pietrelcina Statue of Sant'Anna at her church in Pietrelcina Dear Michael, Today is the Feast of Saint Anne, know in Italy as Sant'Anna. You may wonder why you are getting an email from the Padre Pio Foundation of America talking about this. I will tell you why. There is a very old church in Pietrelcina, Padre Pio’s home town. It is called Sant’Anna Church. This church was very important to Padre Pio as a young boy and as a priest. It is a historic church and it is where our spiritual father, Padre Pio, was baptized and prayed as a very young boy. It is also the church where the young Francesco Forgione consecrated himself to Jesus at the age of 5 years old, where he was confirmed and where he celebrated Mass as a priest for the local residents. The steps that you must climb to get to the church are at the end of a cobblestone road where Padre Pio’s childhood home is. Today at 8PM in Pietrelcina, the town will begin their procession to celebrate Sant'Anna’s Feast Day. As a young boy, Padre Pio would participate in the town's procession. The church bells from Sant’Anna usually begin the procession, but this year, for the first time, that will not happen! The same bells that Padre Pio heard will not be ringing today. The bells are old and the electronic mechanisms that make the bells ring has completely failed. So, that is why we are coming to you today. This is a very costly job for a small town and parish. They estimate the cost to be approximately $30,000. Sant’Anna Church holds many important parts of Padre Pio’s life. Maintaining places of such importance in Padre Pio’s life is our responsibility to preserve if we are to continue to teach about his life and his many spiritual gifts to generations to come.
