Humbled

Humbled

Well, as ever words present themselves, if any of you use the word Gift I will slap you. 20 years of BBC Radio 4 listening, followed by 30 years of writing, that’s 50 years, that’s why some call what I write is just a Gift, Michael Casey the fat silver haired writer in shades from Birmingham does nothing really. It’s just a Gift.
That’s just my prologue, move over Frankie Howard, where shall I begin today. Well the late Summer sun is shining outside and the Light quality is so good, and as you look up you can see the Blue Blue  Sky over Birmingham. My Shanghai wife and her friend Gabo used to marvel at the blue sky in England all those years ago. As we look up it really is humbling, the beauty of the sky, as the astronauts and cosmonauts look down for them mother Earth and Mother Russia and all our Lands are so precious.
You feel this by looking out your window or walking around the park, the light and the feel of the air. Then if you have a few friends it really is humbling that they chose you to be their friend from amongst all the teeming masses. We are like ants scurrying around this planet earth, then we pick up a scent and make friends, and form relationships. We can take friendships for granted, we can neglect them and if we don’t water them, then they can wither and die.
A bad boss blames everybody but praises nobody, except himself. A good boss should be like your dad, or your sheepdog looking after, guarding and guiding. This is where the humbling comes from, you do your job, you are the crossings lady, nobody pays you much attention. Then you save a life an you are all over TMZ, only then does it emerge you’ve done this not once or twice but multiple time. You never blow you own trumpet. You are humbled, genuinely humbled when they give you a reward. The humble finally being rewarded.
When you leave a job that too can be humbling, you didn’t realise just how much they liked you, so you end up with a picture of an angel on your front room wall. It’s enough to make you blush, a bit like being caught when you forgot to do your zipper.
When you fall in love and your emotions are no longer all zipped up, that’s a humbling time too, because that means all the zippers open too. Love is being open to be hurt and trusting the other person enough that they won’t break your heart. It really is the most humbling time of all. Apart from one other, when you hold your child in your arms and cradle it to your heart, now that really is the utmost humbling of times.
I suppose  if like me you have stood in the  dark of the night, and watched the stars pass by, you can hold your child close to you and whisper, if you are out there God, thank you, from the bottom of my heart. I don’t have words to say how happy I am.
God just laughs, but you will have millions of words in the future, even if only I read them, but it is I who will get the credit for all of them. For all Gifts come from God, and that really is humbling.
