Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday he was willing to step down if it meant peace in Ukraine, quipping that he could exchange his departure for Ukraine’s entry into NATO.
Zelensky also said he wanted to see US President Donald Trump as a partner to Ukraine and more than a simply a mediator between Kyiv and Moscow.
‘I really want it to be more than just mediation… that’s not enough,’ he told a press conference in Kyiv.

He wants Donald Trump to ‘understand’ his position and come through with concrete security guarantees to help Kyiv defend itself against the Russian invasion.
‘I want very much from Trump understanding of each other,’ he said, adding: ‘Security guarantees from Trump are much needed.’
Zelensky revealed that Kyiv and Washington were nearer to an agreement on US access to Ukrainian natural resources in exchange for security assistance, adding that US troop deployment in Ukraine was logical.
‘We are making progress,’ Zelensky said during a press conference in Kyiv, adding that Ukrainian and US officials had been in touch about the deal earlier in the day.
But Zelensky warned that about $15billion of previously pledges US military aid was yet to be delivered.

‘The agreement is not yet ready to be signed, there are a number of problematic issues, and in the current form of the draft, the president is not ready to accept it’, they told the broadcaster.
‘Today, the drafts do not reflect a partnership in the agreement and contain only unilateral commitments by Ukraine.’
On Friday night, Zelensky had told a nightly video address that teams of American and Ukrainian negotiators were working on a draft agreement, signalling an imminent deal.
‘This is an agreement that can strengthen our relations, and the key is to work out the details to ensure its effectiveness,’ he said. ‘I look forward to the outcome – a just result.’
Trump also told reporters in the Oval Office on Friday evening: ‘We’re signing an agreement, hopefully in the next fairly short period of time.’
The exact terms are not yet clear, however Trump had been pushing for $500 billion worth of minerals in exchange for continued military support.
